The San Bernardino National Forest of Southern California is divided into two ranges--
Southern and Northern. Fundamentally they're
divided by U.S. Interstate 10 and
geographically by the San Andreas Fault.
The "Birds of the San Bernardino Mountains" guide encompasses
most of the
2,100 square miles of the Northern Portion of the San Bernardino Mountains.
Included are it's many villages, towns and
communities along with its four main lakes:
Silverwood Lake, Lake Gregory, Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear Lake.
As a prior 15 year
resident of Crestline, California, I've come to know quite a bit about the trails, routes and great birding sites around my mountainous
'backyard' and
have included 16 of the best in this guide.
The sites are listed individually with specific information about
each. Also included are
3 fold-out maps to help get you there. The sites are numbered to correspond with the maps and only the
main highways, paved roads, dirt roads, National Forest Roads, and the
Pacific Crest Trail are included for ease in finding these
great birding 'hot spots.'
Also included are "Bird Watching & Sighting Tips" and a "Check List" for bird sightings.
